Chapter Two
Bianca
"Shake Shack?” Niko Karas snorts as we walk into the burger place.
“They have the best fries.”
“Agreed. But I didn’t think…”
“That espresso glaze would pick a burger joint over fine dining?” I arch an eyebrow.
Karas tilts his head back and laughs. A few people nearby stare in our direction but no one gawks or approaches. Soccer isn’t revered in the US the way fútbol is in Spain. And Niko is still at the start of his career, not yet a seasoned, household name like my brother or his two best friends, Alejandro García and Andrés Huntington.
As the onlookers turn back to their friends or menus, my shoulders relax. I like that Niko isn’t recognized. Hell, I like that here, in New York City, I’m not recognized. Here, I’m a nobody, blending in among the crowds.
The anonymity offers a sense of peace that I fully embrace.
“You’re right,” he says, smiling. “I should have known better.”
“Are you disappointed?” I poke, trying to get under his skin although I’m not sure why.
He was fantastic during the photoshoot. The perfect blend of professional and friendly. Of serious yet engaging. He was a natural in front of the camera, willing to try every pose Lynette suggested without hesitation, enthusiastic to wear every look pulled for him without comment. And yet, there’s something about him that irks me.
He’s confident but what professional athlete isn’t?
“Hardly,” he responds, shaking his head. “I’ll take a burger and fries any day of the week. Although, I’m curious why you picked this over pizza. I was waiting for you to shove your thin crust in my face.”
I laugh, before biting the side of my cheek to rein it in. And why the hell does he keep making me laugh? Or even smile? “I hate deep dish,” I mutter just to be surly.
“I figured as much. It’s our turn to order.”
We step up to the counter and Niko looks at me, waiting for me to speak first. I rattle off my order, he follows suit, and then he taps his watch to pay for our meal.
“Thank you,” I murmur.
“Of course.”
We move to wait for our order and I try to study him without being obvious. He’s taller than I expected, nearly as tall as my brother. He’s athletic and lean with thick, dark hair and startling blue eyes. In fact, he almost looks more model than futbolista. High cheekbones, a chiseled jawline, and a full mouth.
I look away, absentmindedly chew a cuticle.
Niko Karas really is the Greek God of Goals. And for the first time, I wonder if he won his nickname for all his scoring off the field instead of on it.
“Here we go,” he says, taking one tray in each hand.
We wander through the restaurant before sliding into a back booth.
He unwraps his burger and takes a bite, moaning.
I can’t help but grin—argh! I take a sip of my Coke. “Are you excited for your move to Germany?”
“Very,” he replies, plucking a French fry. “My goal was always to play overseas and honestly, given my age, I was starting to wonder if I’d ever make it.”
“How old are you?”
“You don’t know? I thought you would have done your homework on me, New York.”
“Bianca,” I correct. “And I didn’t dig that deep.”
He grins. “I’m twenty-five. You?”
I rear back. “You should never ask a woman her age.”
He rolls his eyes. “How old are you?”
“Twenty-eight.”
“And already running photoshoots. Good for you. I watched you rush around all day and I had no idea that branding could be as intense as soccer training.”
This time, I roll my eyes. What a schmoozer. “That’s a good line.”
“I didn’t mean it as one. Take the compliment at face value.” He takes another bite of his burger, unruffled by my attitude.
And I pause. Because what the fuck am I even doing? Why am I giving this guy—this sincere, funny, engaging man—a hard time? What the hell is wrong with me?
Take the compliment at face value.
And that, I realize, is the issue. I’m always looking for the ulterior motive. For the hidden maneuver. For the letdown.
It’s probably why I’ve been single—painfully single—since Christian and I broke up when I was twenty-two. For as much shit as I used to give Luca before he pulled his head out of his ass and made a real commitment to Carla, my big brother and I have more in common than I want to admit.
With both of our parents gone, and relationships turned sour, we stick to ourselves more than put ourselves out there. Especially me. Especially with men and dating.
Across from me, Niko chomps on his burger, completely oblivious to my moment of enlightenment. I haven’t had a real boyfriend in six years. I haven’t gone on a real date in four months. I haven’t had sex in six weeks.
And sitting across from me is an adorably cocky, sexy-as-sin futbolista who’s moving to another country next week.
Why am I flipping him shit and being prickly when I could embrace what he’s offering? An opportunity to have a fun weekend in the city with a man who’s rumored to be a god between the sheets. A man I’ll most likely never see again outside of professional, contractual obligations.
Sucking in a breath, I say two words I often struggle with. “Thank you.”
And, as if hearing the change in my tone, Niko looks up. “You’re welcome. Tell me more about you and your life in New York. You seem to enjoy it.”
“I do,” I answer truthfully, picking up my burger. “I moved to Valencia to be closer to my brother a few years ago. It wasn’t that long after our mom passed—”
Pain washes over his expression and I’m thrown off guard by the depth of his compassion. “I’m sorry, Bianca.”
I dip my head in thanks and try to explain, “She was sick for a long time. After she passed, I was struggling so I moved to Spain and spent about a year there. But I missed the city. I missed feeling like I had a purpose, a direction. When URBN Move offered me an internship, I jumped at the chance. That was a year and a half ago.”
“And now you’re running the show.”
I snicker. “Hardly. But I feel like Chris gave me a real chance to prove myself.”
“Chris is a good guy.”
“And a good boss. A great mentor. I’m lucky.”
“I’m sure he feels the same.”
I blush at Niko’s praise. “I hope so. For now, I love my job, I love my life in New York. I have a lot of friends from childhood still living here so it’s been an easy transition back.”
“That’s good. As excited as I am, and grateful, for the opportunity with Stuttgart, I’m nervous about the transition.” Niko picks at his fries. When he meets my eyes, I note his sincerity. I wonder if he feels the same way I do. Like one weekend with no strings attached allows for a vulnerability that couldn’t exist if our paths were going to cross again.
In a strange way, the limitation of our time together fosters freedom. It’s thrilling...unexpectedly so.
“Scared you won’t make friends?” I tease gently.
He smirks but then his lips flatten and he sighs. “Kind of. Scared I won’t fit in. I’ve never lived so far from my family before.”
“All of your family is in Chicago?”
“Most of my mom’s side. My dad’s parents live in Greece. But my parents, my brother, my sister and her family, and my mom’s parents and siblings and their families are all in or around Chicago.”
“This is giving My Big Fat Greek Wedding vibes.”
Niko barks a laugh. “My family could be the blueprint for that movie.”
“I’d love to have grown up near my cousins and grandparents.”
“I think I’ve taken it for granted. They come to my games, we have weekly dinners at my YiaYia’s house, we do all the holidays together… It’s going to be different. I’m the first to fly the nest.”
“I understand that. If I had all my family in one place, it would be hard to move. But it is for your dream…”
“Yeah. And it’s not just my dream. My entire family has invested in me, in this opportunity, since I was a kid.”
I nod, recalling the sacrifices my family made so Luca could play at the highest levels of competitive fútbol. “My dad and Luca moved back to Italy years ago while my mom and I remained in New York so Luca could join an academy.”
“I didn’t realize he played in Italy.”
“It wasn’t for long. Our father passed shortly after Luca moved to an academy in Spain…”
“Shit, Bianca,” Niko says, his eyes filling with grief. For me. “That fucking sucks. I had no idea.”
“It was a long time ago.”
“Doesn’t make it hurt less.”
I shift in my seat, uncomfortable with how heavy, how real, this conversation is becoming. I hardly ever speak about my parents and in the space of ten minutes, I’ve mentioned them both to Niko. “The whole family makes sacrifices for someone to pursue a sport at the professional level.”
“Yes,” he agrees, holding my eyes. “So, you understand what’s at stake.”
“You’ll make them proud, Karas. Stuttgart is a good move.”
He smiles but it doesn’t reach his eyes. “We’ll see.”
Crumpling up the napkin in my hand, I look around the bustling restaurant. “You want to go get a drink? I know a place nearby.”
Niko’s eyes light up. “I thought you’d never ask, New York.”
I shake my head, standing from the booth. “It’s Bianca, Karas. We’re spending one weekend together. Don’t give me any cute pet names.”
“So, we’re graduating from one night to a weekend?”
I shove him playfully as we move toward the exit.
He holds his hands up defensively. “I’m just making sure I understand what’s happening here.”
“You know damn well what’s happening here.”
He reaches for my hand and laces our fingers together. I jerk back, looking at him in surprise.
He grins easily, like it’s as familiar as breathing, and brings the back of my hand to his mouth before pressing a simple kiss to my skin. “Then I’m warning you, New York. I’m going to make the most of it.”
